The 1930 census says he owned his farm in Cooper Township, Sangamon County, Illinois. He came to America in 1870. Obituary: Buckhart, Aug. 28 - Charles H. Schwartz, 79-year old farmer of this community, died at 2:45 pm today at his home. He had resided near here for thirty-five years. Mr. Schwartz was born in Germany and came to the United States when 9 years old. On Feb. 21, 1889, he married Miss Virginia Kurfiss, who survives, together with a son, Elmer, Rochester; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Terrell, Springfield; Mrs. Pearl Stribling, Ashland; one granddaughter, Dorothy Maxfield, Springfield; one brother, Henry, Rochester, and several nieces and nephews. A son, Elden, died in 1918. Remains were removed to the C. L. Jones Funeral Home in Rochester. Illinois State Journal, 8/29/1940, page 16. 1886-1889 Sangamon County Marriage Applications records indicate their marriage date as 2/20/1889. Marriage record found in Vol. 006, Pg. 0266. From the book, History of Sangamon County (Illinois - 1881), page 865, under the heading Temperance: "The township of Cooper is emphatically a temperance town. It has never had in it a saloon. A division of the Sons of Temperance ws organized in 1858, which existed about four years, until so many of the members enlisted in the army that regular meetings could not be held. A Good Templar Lodge was organized February 16, 1881, with the following named charter members: ....Charles Schwartz...." Is this the same Charles Schwartz that is mine?
